Jet skis in Tenerife – safaris, departure ports, prices and rules

Jet ski trips in Tenerife always take place with a guide.You cannot hire a jet ski to head out alone and choose your own route – participants form an organised group and follow the guide.

Trips differ in duration, departure port, route, requirements and pricing method. This guide explains what to expect in different parts of the island, how to choose a single or double jet ski, what affects the price and which safety rules participants must follow.

During a safari, participants follow the guide, while the exact route depends on the port, trip duration and ocean conditions.

How are jet ski trips organised?

Regardless of the port and trip duration, this is not an unrestricted jet ski rental. The group receives a briefing, sets off together and remains under the guide's supervision throughout the trip.

Before departure

Briefing and preparation

The crew explains how to control the jet ski, safe distances, the guide's signals and how to behave when leaving the harbour and riding over waves.

During the trip

Following the guide

Jet skis travel in an agreed order behind the guide. Overtaking, leaving the group or choosing another route is not permitted.

Route

The guide decides

The direction and pace depend on the port, trip duration, the group's ability and current ocean conditions.

The most popular safaris: one hour or two hours?

The longer option is not automatically better for everyone. Your choice should depend on experience, fitness, budget, susceptibility to fatigue and your plan for the day. Shorter rides and trips lasting three hours or more may also be available in some locations.

One-hour jet ski safari in Tenerife
Shorter option

One-hour safari

A good choice for first-time riders, people with limited time and anyone who wants to combine jet skiing with another attraction on the same day.

  • less physical effort;
  • an intense dose of excitement;
  • easier to fit into a day's itinerary.
Two-hour jet ski safari in Tenerife
Longer option

Two-hour safari

For people who want to spend more time on the ocean and see a longer stretch of the southern coast. It requires greater stamina.

  • more actual riding time;
  • a longer route and more scenery;
  • greater strain on the arms and back.

The simplest way to choose

Choose one hour if it is your first time or you want a short, dynamic activity.Choose two hours if riding on the ocean is meant to be the main activity of the day and you cope well with longer physical effort.

One or two people on a jet ski?

Before booking, check whether you are choosing a jet ski for one person or an option with a passenger. These are two different experiences and may be priced differently.

One person riding a jet ski in Tenerife
Single jet skiOne person rides the jet ski but still travels in an organised group behind the guide. This is the sportiest option.
Two people riding one jet ski in Tenerife
Riding with a passengerA good option for a couple or a parent with an older child. The passenger must meet the age and height requirements.

Age of the driver and passenger

Spanish rules set the basic age requirement for the driver. However, an operator may apply stricter conditions, while the passenger's minimum age, height or weight depends on the specific service rules and jet ski model.

Adult driverNormally at least 18 years old
Driver aged 16–17May drive with written consent from a parent or guardian; carry the signed consent and a copy of that person's identity document
Minimum passenger ageSet by the operator – check the conditions of the selected option
Height and weightLimits depend on the operator, jet ski model and safety conditions

Is a licence required?

You do not need a boating licence or previous experience to join a guided tourist jet ski trip. Before departure, every driver receives a briefing and must follow the guide's instructions.

You must, however, meet the age requirements, present identification and – for a person aged 16–17 – have the required consent from a parent or guardian. The operator may impose stricter conditions.

Safety briefing before a jet ski safari
Listening carefully to the briefing is more important than having previous jet ski experience.

What is usually included, and what should you check?

Usually included

  • the jet ski and fuel for the planned route;
  • briefing and supervision by guides;
  • a life jacket;
  • insurance required for the organised trip.

Check before booking

  • whether the price is for a single jet ski, double jet ski or one person;
  • the exact riding time, meeting point and check-in time;
  • transfer, photos, video, wetsuit and storage;
  • any deposit or insurance excess;
  • the rescheduling and cancellation rules.

What affects the price of a jet ski trip?

Prices change quickly and mean little without context. Two apparently similar offers may include a different amount of actual riding time, a different number of participants or different extras.

Duration and type of tripA short trip, a one-hour safari and a long route are not comparable services.
Single or doubleCheck whether you are paying for the jet ski, the driver, the passenger or the complete set.
Port and character of the routeThe departure point affects logistics, scenery and the possible range of the trip.
Hotel transferIt may be included, available for an extra charge or unavailable.
Photos and recordingsThey are often a separate service, so do not assume that a media package is included.
Group or private tripPrivate arrangements usually cost more than a standard group safari.

Which ports do jet ski trips depart from?

Jet ski safaris may start from different ports on Tenerife's southern and western coasts. The location affects the meeting point, travel time and the stretch of coast you will see. Always check the port stated in the selected offer – not every route starts in the same place.

Jet skis at Marina San Miguel in Tenerife
Marina San MiguelThe south-east and a rugged volcanic coastline.
Las Galletas harbour and jet skis in Tenerife
Las GalletasThe south, Palm-Mar and rocky sections of coastline.
Jet skis at Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje
Puerto ColónCosta Adeje, La Caleta and westbound routes depending on duration.
Los Gigantes harbour and jet skis in Tenerife
Los GigantesThe west, towering cliffs and the direction of Masca Bay.

Which area of Tenerife should you choose?

Marina San MiguelA convenient choice for people staying around Golf del Sur, Amarilla Golf and El Médano. Routes reveal the less developed volcanic coast of the south-east.
Las GalletasA convenient option from Costa del Silencio, Palm-Mar and Los Cristianos. The exact route may follow the rocky southern coastline.
Puerto ColónA practical departure point for visitors staying in Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos. The trip duration determines how far west the route may go.
Los GigantesA choice for people interested in the monumental western cliffs. The direction of Masca or Punta de Teno depends on duration, conditions and the guide's decision.

Important:the name of the port does not guarantee a particular bay or destination. The operator may shorten, alter or cancel the route when required by waves, wind, visibility, marine traffic or decisions of the maritime authorities.

Getting there and the meeting pointArrive sufficiently early because check-in and the briefing take place before the scheduled departure time. A hotel transfer is not automatically included in the price. If you need one, check availability before booking and do not leave your journey until the last minute.

When should you go, and what weather is best?

The mild climate means jet ski trips can operate throughout the year, but availability does not guarantee departure every day. Wind, wave height and direction, visibility and local conditions at the harbour entrance matter more than air temperature.

Sunshine on the beach does not always mean a calm ocean. There is also no universal rule that every morning slot will be better than an afternoon one. The crew makes the final decision based on conditions in that area, and the exact route may change immediately before departure.

What should you take on a jet ski trip?

Ocean conditions during a jet ski safari in Tenerife
You can get completely soaked on the ocean, even when conditions near the shore appear calm.
  • identity documentfor the driver;
  • ticket or booking confirmation on your phone;
  • swimwear and a towel;
  • sunscreen;
  • dry clothes to change into;
  • waterproof protection for personal items if the crew allows you to take them on the jet ski.

Safety and contraindications

Spanish rules require both the driver and passenger to wear approved life jackets. On group trips, jet skis travel in a line behind the guide without overtaking; the regulations require at least one guide for every four jet skis.

  • do not enter marked swimming areas;
  • keep your distance, watch the guide's signals and use the safety lanyard;
  • riding takes place in daylight, with good visibility and suitable weather;
  • alcohol, drugs and reckless manoeuvres are incompatible with safe riding.

Jet skiing is generally unsuitable for pregnant women and people with serious back, heart or balance problems or recent injuries. The operator sets the detailed contraindications. If you have a medical condition or doubts, consult a doctor and the organiser before booking.

Dolphins and turtles – no false promises

You may encounter wild animals by chance while on the ocean, but a jet ski safari is not a wildlife-watching cruise. Do not book this activity expecting to see dolphins, whales or turtles. Their presence cannot be guaranteed, and the route and pace are determined primarily by safety rules.

The most common mistakes before booking

Comparing only the priceCheck the duration, number of participants per jet ski, departure point and scope of the service.
Arriving at the last minuteYou need time for check-in, changing and the briefing before departure.
No identity documentThe driver's details may be checked before the safari begins.
Assuming the transfer is includedTravel must be arranged or confirmed separately before the activity date.
Ignoring your fitnessTwo hours on waves can be considerably more tiring than one hour.
Expecting guaranteed animalsThis safari focuses on riding, not wildlife watching.

Frequently asked questions

Can a beginner drive a jet ski?

Yes. Safaris are also available to beginners. A briefing takes place before departure, and you must follow the guide's instructions while riding.

Can you hire a jet ski and leave without a guide?

No. Tourist jet ski trips in Tenerife take place in organised groups with a guide. Participants do not choose their own route and cannot leave the group.

Are any qualifications required?

No boating licence is required to join a guided tourist safari. However, the briefing, age requirements, identification and the operator's rules still apply.

Can two people ride one jet ski?

Yes, if the selected option is a double, the manufacturer allows a passenger and both people meet the operator's requirements. Confirm the age, height and minor-participant rules before booking.

Do you need to be able to swim?

A life jacket is compulsory, but check the operator's detailed requirements before booking and tell the crew about any concerns.

Can riders switch drivers during the safari?

Do not assume this is possible. Changing drivers depends on the operator's rules, the participants' ages and the organisation of the trip. Confirm it before booking.

Is the price per person or per jet ski?

It depends on the operator and option. Some prices apply to one single jet ski, others to a double jet ski or to each participant. Always check the pricing method before payment.

Can the route change?

Yes. The departure port and stated direction do not guarantee reaching a specific location. Waves, wind, visibility, marine traffic and the guide's decision may affect the route.

What happens in bad weather?

The operator decides on the basis of ocean conditions. The route, departure time or date may be changed. Check the current cancellation rules when booking.

Is one hour or two hours better?

For a first ride or a tight schedule, one hour is usually enough. Choose two hours if you want a longer ride and cope well with physical effort on waves.

Legal basis and current information:the information about age, life jackets and the rules for group trips is based on Spain's Royal Decree 259/2002. Operators may apply additional requirements.View the consolidated document in the BOE →
